A message from the Master
Welcome to the web site of the Lyceum Lodge of Research.
The Lodge exists to promote interest in Masonic knowledge, and to encourage all Freemasons to become actively involved in their own Masonic education and personal research. Thus we have created this site to extend the fruits of our labours into cyber space.
The only thing we haven't yet achieved (but are working on) is to convey to visitors to this site the fun element in our work. For that, we would recommend a visit to our meetings.
This web page has three main purposes:
- To serve as an archive of papers presented to the Lodge since its inception in 1975.
- To publicise the current and forthcoming events which the Lodge organises.
- To promote easy access to the Lodge's work, so that interested Masons can use our work in their own research and personal growth in Masonic knowledge.
Please feel free to browse through the Lodge's work, and to download what you need. We merely ask that you acknowledge your source if you use our work.
Lyceum not only presents a platform for the work of local researchers; it presents a series of seminars for prospective and newly made Masons, as well as an orientation to the work of a Master in the Chair. We plan to put live recordings of these seminars onto this site during the course of this year.

Lyceum Lodge
Lyceum Lodge of Research No. 8682 is a Freemasons' Lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England.
We meet at Freemasons Hall, Parktown, Johannesburg, South Africa. The Lodge was formed on the 1st of December 1975.
Most of our meetings are around the presentation of papers and lectures, some of which are available for download on this site. We receive many visitors to our meetings from other Lodges and many meetings are open to non-Masons.
We also present three different seminars, each twice a year, which are aimed at those who are interested in becoming Freemasons, those who have recently become Freemasons and those who will become Masters of their own Lodges in the near future. These seminars are important for the future of Freemasonry in that they are aimed at encouraging those who will be potentially suitable members to be come such and for them to then get the most out of their membership.
Please see our Calendar page for information on upcoming functions.
